Classic Board Games for Kids - Hobbies - Games

With all that today's high-tech gadgetry has to offer, it seems that we, as a modern people, have lost our touch with creativity and imagination. Back when most of us were kids, we had games that caused us to think, that helped us to interact with other people, and to learn valuable life skills while building relationships with our peers. Today's games, however, almost seemed to encourage isolation, and most certainly do not help our kids to learn how to interact with other people properly.

Sometimes the best escapes not only for us, up for our kids as well, are the classic toys and games that we grew up with -- board games that gave us the motivation to think for ourselves, to interact with others, and have fun at the same time. Here are our all-time favorite classic board games for kids.

Scrabble

When you think of classic toys and games, Scrabble is one of the first games that comes to mind. Not only does this now-vintage board game allow kids and adults of all ages it to interact in a fun environment, it really helps them to use their noggin a little bit as well.

Sorry

Sorry has been around for quite awhile -- this classic board game works out quite well for younger children, even as young as five years old. While not mentally as intense as Scrabble, Sorry is a surefire fun pastime for your children, or even yourself, while you're playing with your children.

Chutes and Ladders

Chutes and Ladders is a game that will teach your children valuable life lessons, at least in a small way. This classic board game caters to it the younger group quite well, allowing mature three-year-olds and older to take part in a fun, and somewhat educational, pastime.

Twister

Twister, while not exactly a board game per se, fits nicely into the group of classic toys and games, and can be a real riot for school age children, likely those who are in the first grade or a little bit older. Not only does Twister bring excitement into the day, it really helps kids, and the kids at heart, to interact with others in a fun environment.

Monopoly

No list of classic toys and games would be complete without a mention of Monopoly. We all grew up playing Monopoly, and in a way, it really teaches us a valuable life lessons. At least in our home, playing Monopoly always sparked controversy. Whether or not Monopoly teaches you shrewd business lessons at an early age are not, it's a good start to learn conflict resolution with your siblings.

Today's games can't hold a candle to the benefits offered up by the classic toys and games of recent history. If you're looking to give something valuable to your children, or even just the children your family, instead of purchasing the latest video game on the market, look into picking up one of these five vintage board games instead. Not only are classic toys and games cheaper than the latest and greatest in cutting-edge entertainment technology -- classic board games last longer, offer valuable life skills, and allow your kids to have fun in a safe, thought-provoking, and entertaining way.

  1. Great list of classic games to play. I agree that Scrabble is a classic that almost anybody can enjoy. I haven't really played Chutes and Ladders, believe it or not. Monopoly is a good one, but can often create disputes when playing with kids and also takes 2-3 hours on a good day. I'll stick with Scrabble as my favorite.
