Best Two Player Strategy Board Game: Abalone

Abalone is a Mensa Select and Spiel des Jahres Award Winning Board Game from Belgium and a participating game in the Mind Sports Olympiad.

Abalone was invented in 1987 by Laurent Levi and Michel Lalet. In 1999, a number of top players from the Mind Sport Olympic signed an agreement to use a different starting position (the Belgian daisy) to revitalise the game. This has been used for top tournaments since then, including the AbaCup.

Even though the strategy in Abalone is fairly deep, the basic rules are simple and engaging enough to suite just about any age. There are enough marbles and enough empty spaces that there are many moves and counter moves. This is a very good game. It shows up pretty regularly at our Scout troop outings, and is always played when its there! Frank.

Just when you think that you have one of your opponent's marbles pinned down, he will make a lateral move that will cause you to be horribly out of position.

Described as "Game of the Decade", Abalone is a game where you are literally trying to push your opponent over the edge and well worth adding to your Board Game Collection.
